Porcelain has a dense body and becomes semi-vitreous after firing, so it does not absorb water. When porcelain is fired, small holes called "pinholes" may appear on the surface due to the combustion of air or organic matter remaining in the body. Iron originally contained in the clay may oxidize during firing in the kiln, appearing on the surface as black spots.
